Lead Forms vs. Messages on Meta: What $3,000 of Pergola Ads Taught Us

By Social Lead Digital · Updated September 20, 2026

Meta lets you run ads two ways. One opens a chat in Messenger. The other opens a short form right inside Facebook or Instagram. Most agencies pick one and never test the other. We tested both, for the same client, in the same month.

The numbers

  • June 2026, messages only: $590 spent, 2 leads. $295 per lead.
  • July 2026, form campaign added on July 8: $2,423 spent, 59 leads. $41 per lead.
  • Inside July, the form campaign alone: $1,129 spent, 48 leads. $23.52 per lead.
  • Inside July, message campaigns: $1,294 spent, 11 leads. $117.67 per lead.

The form campaign took less than half the budget and brought 81% of the leads.

Why forms won

A pergola costs as much as a car. People who are serious will give you their patio size and their zip code. People who are curious will send "how much?" and never reply again. The form filters them for you. The chat makes you do it by hand.

When messages still make sense

For low-price, quick-decision services, a chat can be faster. For anything over $5,000, start with a form, ask about budget and timing, and call the lead within five minutes.
